The Kestrel Meters will be used during EMA's free weekly educational community marine science classes. The free beach classes are an opportunity for the local and vacationing community to explore and learn about Surf City's marine environment.
According to NK CEO, Alix James, "The Kestrel 4500 Weather Meters donation allows participants to monitor the local weather on Topsail Island, along with understanding the importance of how the weather plays a vital role in the ecosystems. Kestrel meters are ideal educational tools because they are easy to use and almost indestructible, and allow kids and adults to take accurate measurements of wind speed, direction, temperature and humidity to match their observations – making science fun and real-world is the best way to encourage STEM interest."
EMA's classes provide a lesson on seine netting use and history. During the lesson, groups head into the water to catch and release various fish or crab species. After seine netting, EMA discusses the importance of keeping beaches clean, responsible fishing, caring for animals and how families can enjoy the island.
"The Kestrel donation allows us to further enhance our free marine science education programs. We have seen the impact of our programs when we introduce the fun and exciting side of marine life. Our vision is to educate and inspire future generations," stated Kathleen Glover, the founder of EMA.
The free local educational enrichment activity is for vacationing families, day trippers and locals. The program allows participants to connect to the beach community, the town of Surf City and the environment.
Ecological Marine Adventures (EMA) is a Marine Education Center that specializes in dynamic, hands-on, in-the-field education adventures. EMA operates a FREE public aquarium and marine exploration lab. This facility is outfitted with touch tanks, a ray touch pool, Topsail Island ecology exhibits, shell collections, aquarium tanks with local marine species, a microscope and dissection lab with digital, compound and dissection microscopes.
