ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 29, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- More than 1,500 hospice and palliative care CEOs, executive directors, senior leaders, managers and other industry experts have gathered at the Gaylord National Harbor Hotel and Convention Center for one of the nation's largest professional development events geared for hospice and palliative care providers.

Conference participants will explore best practices that expand hospice and palliative care service delivery, define excellence, allow organizational leaders to more effectively engage with their staff and communities, and enhance quality throughout the care continuum.
Plenary speakers include: Atul Gawande, M.D., Marshall Goldsmith, Ph.D., Mark Miller, Ph.D., J. Donald Schumacher, Psy.D., and Diana Whitney, Ph.D.
Some of the highlights of this year's conference include the launch of a new public awareness campaign, "LIVE – Without Pain," created to dispel myths about pain and empower patients and family caregivers to advocate for expert pain relief in all care settings through education and how-to resources.
"LIVE—Without Pain" has been developed in partnership between NHPCO's Caring Connections and Purdue Pharma L.P.
At Thursday morning's opening plenary session, StoryCorps will present on its Legacy project and its mission is to provide people with life-threatening conditions and their caregivers the opportunity to record, preserve and share their stories. StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind, familiar to millions of people who listen to their broadcasts on National Public Radio on Friday morning. StoryCorps' first Legacy broadcast will air on Friday, March 30.
On Wednesday, March 28, more than 300 hospice leaders went to Capitol Hill for the hospice community's annual Capitol Hill Day hosted by NHPCO's affiliate, the Hospice Action Network.
Events of the week will culminate with the National Hospice Foundation's Gala on March 30, with a special theme,"Women of Hospice: A Salute to Heroines and Humanitarians."
