NextAdvisor.com Announces 2012 Cash Back Credit Card Analysis
Leading consumer resource reveals which cards provide the most cash back
SAN FRANCISCO, June 22, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- NextAdvisor.com, a leading consumer information web site, has announced the results of its 2012 Cash Back Credit Card Analysis. This independent analysis researched leading cash back credit cards to determine which cards earned users the most cash back rewards based on a typical consumer's spending. Twelve different credit cards were included, and first place went to the Capital One® Cash Back Rewards Card ($100 Bonus) which earned an average consumer $460 over the course of two years. The Blue Cash Everyday(SM) from American Express came in second, and the Blue Cash Preferred(SM) from American Express ranked third.
NextAdvisor.com also created a Personalized Cash Back Calculator that enables each consumer to calculate how much cash back they can expect to earn from each card based on their individual spending habits. "Cash back credit cards are a great way to earn extra money for something you're already doing, but it can be extremely complex to figure out exactly how much cash back you'll earn each year from different cards," said Tasha Lockyer, Senior Editor at NextAdvisor.com. "Our analysis of the best cash back card for the typical consumer is a great resource, but we also wanted to let each person determine the best card for their personal spending patterns. Users can enter their monthly credit card spending in various categories, then instantly view their personalized results, which show exactly how much cash back they can expect to earn, with the cards ordered from highest earnings to lowest."
The calculation used to determine the best cash back credit card for the typical consumer was based on data from the 2010 Bureau of Labor Statistics Customer Spending survey. Using the survey results, NextAdvisor.com derived an average category spend breakdown, assuming a $1,000 per month ($12,000 annual) spend, with 7.5% of that spend on groceries, 5% on dining out and 4.5% on gas. Additionally, the analysis assumed 2% of a cardholder's spend would be allocated to travel, 1% to the rotating categories that some credit cards offer on a quarterly basis and 0.5% to department stores.
Included in the analysis were leading cash back cards like the first place Capital One® Cash Back Rewards Card - $100 Cash Back Bonus, Chase Freedom® Visa - $100 Bonus Cash Back + 0% Intro APR, Blue Cash EverydaySM Card from American Express, Discover® More Card and the Citi® Dividend Platinum Select® Visa®. "Before starting this analysis, we knew that comparing the cash back cards was a complicated process. However, even we were surprised at how difficult it was to determine how much cash back you could earn for some cards," said Lockyer.
The cash back card analysis is the latest exclusive credit card research conducted by NextAdvisor.com, which previously conducted an in-depth travel reward credit card analysis. In addition to its research studies, NextAdvisor.com provides independent credit card reviews of all types of credit cards, including cash back credit cards, low APR cards, business credit cards and cards designed for those with average or bad credit.
