The new outpatient facility is a key part of the expansion of Och Spine at NewYork-Presbyterian, which brings together the world's top orthopedic and neurosurgical spine surgeons and other spine care specialists to treat all spine problems, from the simple to the complex, using surgical and nonsurgical procedures. The Spiral is the first dedicated spine center where world-class experts from Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Weill Cornell Medicine will see patients in the same location.
"With the opening of Och Spine at NewYork-Presbyterian/The Spiral, we are setting a new standard for exceptional spine care," said Dr. Steven J. Corwin, president and chief executive officer of NewYork-Presbyterian. "Designed with the patients' needs in mind, this beautiful state-of-the-art facility matches the world-class experts who will work side-by-side to deliver comprehensive, personalized spine care."
The 50,000-square-foot facility, featuring the latest technologies, occupies the entire second floor of The Spiral, a 66-story tower, developed by Tishman Speyer, located in Manhattan's Hudson Yards neighborhood. It will offer a one-stop destination for patients to receive individualized, coordinated spine care from diagnosis through treatment, recovery, and rehabilitation. Patients will have access to a collaborative team of Och Spine orthopedic and neurological surgeons; neurologists; physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians; pain management specialists; radiologists; and physical therapists, all in one convenient location.
"Och Spine at NewYork-Presbyterian/The Spiral is transforming the way spine care is delivered," said Jerry Speyer, co-chair of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital's Board of Trustees. "Embracing technology, innovation, and research, this new facility brings together the world's leading spine experts under one roof to provide the highest quality care and a seamless patient experience."
The new center was made possible thanks to a foundational gift of $50 million from the Jane and Daniel Och Family Foundation to expand the renowned Och Spine program across the New York metro area.
"We are proud to support the opening of Och Spine at NewYork-Presbyterian/The Spiral and to continue to expand access to outstanding spine care," said Jane and Dan Och. "Now more people with back pain and other spine conditions will be able to receive the very best care from leading specialists in one convenient location."
The facility includes 33 exam rooms, six procedure rooms, radiology suites with two MRI machines, two CT scanners, two X-ray machines, and an EOS machine, a medical imaging system that takes low-dose X-ray images of a patient's body in a standing position to create 2D and 3D images of the skeletal system, and a 2,000-square-foot rehabilitation gym staffed by physical therapists who specialize in spine care.
"We are excited to open this state-of-the-art facility, which will allow us to take care of the full spectrum of spine patients — locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally — and help them return to their lives and communities," said Dr. Lawrence Lenke, co-director of Och Spine at NewYork-Presbyterian and chief of spinal deformity surgery at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center.
"Whether a patient is among those who benefit from non-operative treatment, or the much smaller percentage who require surgery, the foundation of our spine care is a collaborative environment where experts from two renowned medical schools work as one unified team to improve outcomes and elevate the patient experience," says Dr. Roger Härtl, co-director of Och Spine at NewYork-Presbyterian and director of neurosurgery spine at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
The outpatient facility has designated spaces for radiology, procedures (including injections of anti-inflammatory or pain-relieving medications), physical therapy, and collaborative workspaces for physicians. Patients may also be seen by multiple providers from different specialties during the same visit.
Och Spine at NewYork-Presbyterian/The Spiral is conveniently located within a few blocks of major transportation hubs, making it easily accessible for patients from all five boroughs, as well as New Jersey, Connecticut, Westchester, Long Island, and those traveling nationally and internationally.
As leaders in both non-operative spine care and minimally invasive and complex surgical techniques, Och Spine experts work together to determine the best approach to treating back or neck injuries, herniated discs, scoliosis, spinal tumors, degenerative spine disorders, and spinal trauma. Adults and children travel from all over the country and world to receive care from Och Spine at NewYork-Presbyterian operative and non-operative specialists.
