WALLDORF, Germany, March 8, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- SAP AG (NYSE: SAP) today announced it has been named a winner of the inaugural 2012 Climate Leadership Awards, for which the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognizes corporate, organizational and individual leadership in addressing climate change and reducing carbon pollution. The award recognizes SAP's entire energy and carbon strategy, from its supply chain efforts to its internal operations, as well as the energy and sustainable operations software it delivers to customers worldwide.

Through its efforts over the past three years, SAP has helped avoid at least 5.7 million tons of carbon emissions, the equivalent of the carbon capture of 1,000 New York City Central Parks. For example, energy management solutions from SAP for manufacturers have helped save $550 million in energy related costs. Additionally, the company has helped utilities deploy smart grid solutions that will help 30 million households use energy more responsibly, saving them an estimated $390 million for every percent of efficiency gained. By fully evaluating its value chain, SAP confirmed that the vast majority of its emissions -- more than 80 percent -- stem from use of its products. This information is helping SAP develop better tools for its customers and provides a strong foundation for deepening its green IT strategy moving forward.
Internally, SAP has adjusted policies, upgraded its facilities and data centers and invested in video conferencing to increase its energy and carbon efficiency for the last five consecutive years. Furthermore, the company increased its purchase of electricity from renewable sources to 47 percent. Thus SAP's own energy and sustainability initiatives have led to a cumulative cost avoidance of EUR 190 million since 2008 and EUR 25 million alone in 2011, in comparison to a business-as-usual extrapolation based on 2007. The company remains committed to achieving its target of reducing emissions to year-2000 levels by 2020.
For the 2012 Climate Leadership Awards, SAP was recognized in the Supply Chain Leadership Award category for addressing climate change, reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions along the value chain, and setting and exceeding aggressive emissions reduction goals and running SAP software at customers' sites. Along with the EPA, the awards are presented by the Association of Climate Change Officers, the Center for Climate and Energy Solutions (formerly the Pew Center on Global Climate Change) and The Climate Registry.
The portfolio of SAP solutions for sustainability help companies to reduce energy costs, better manage operational risk, ensure a sustainable supply chain and products and provide holistic insight into their sustainability performance. To learn more, visit the 2010 Sustainability Report.
