WALLDORF, Germany, Oct. 14, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- SAP SE (NYSE: SAP) today announced that it has joined the newly launched "All You Need is Code" initiative, sponsored by European Commission vice president Neelie Kroes, together with partners in the technology industry including Facebook, Microsoft and Rovio. This initiative will promote coding and design thinking at all levels of schooling, as well as in more informal settings, equipping Europeans with the 21st century's core technical and economic skill by making it central in education across the continent. SAP's participation furthers its commitment to simplify young people's access to technology education and career paths.
"At SAP, we know that youth are the drivers of innovation and economic growth as future entrepreneurs, leaders, employees and consumers," said Franck Cohen, president, SAP EMEA. "As Europe's largest homegrown information technology company, SAP has a special role to play in helping the Europe's youth code to make the world run better. Beyond our unique responsibility to the youth in Europe, we look forward to co-innovating alongside students through our SAP University Alliances program, cultivating and hiring local talent and creating opportunity in our communities. Although the campaign is open to a broad public across Europe, we believe it is important to involve partners that are focused on the social impact of code teaching and web programming."
The "All You Need is Code" initiative was conceived at the 2014 World Economic Forum, where vice president Kroes called on the private sector to endorse the Davos Declaration to deepen support for the Grand Coalition for Digital Jobs, a multi-stakeholder partnership SAP joined in 2013 to address skills gaps in Europe. One of the three concrete requests of this declaration was for the private sector to assist in the modernization of European education systems to ensure that no student leaves school without a basic set of IT skills. Launched today, the eu.code.org website will provide resources in a number of languages, with tools for everyone from the youngest coders to teachers, including lesson plans, industry training and professional certifications. To fulfill its commitments to the initiative, SAP is contributing to and scaling up existing programs such as the SAP® University Alliances program, the openSAP platform, SAP Learning Hub, the developer center on SAP Community Network and Academy Cube.
As part of the "All You Need is Code" campaign, SAP and partners have sent an open letter to the Ministries of Education to raise awareness about the benefits and criticality of digital skills for the future of digital Europe and the success of young Europeans. To help make all Europeans aware of the importance of coding to the continent's future, SAP is co-organizing approximately 40 events and workshops across Europe during the EU Code Week.
"The SAP commitment to corporate social responsibility over the past years has been inspirational and having the support of SAP for EU Code Week is a tremendous boost to all of us who are involved," said Bernard Kirk, director of Ireland's Galway Education Centre. "The events planned by SAP teams during EU Code Week will greatly benefit the next generation and improve their lives by highlight the opportunities available to them in coding."
SAP also sees the campaign as a great opportunity to strengthen and deepen its engagement with nonprofits and social businesses that improve access to education for underprivileged communities across Europe. Under-represented talents of the digital economy, such as women and underserved youth, are a priority for the engagement of SAP CSR EMEA which commits to support the development of their professional potential.
