Newport Academy Featured on NBC's 'Today' Show Discussing Teen Athletes and Opioid Addiction
Newport CEO and alumni weigh in on how sports injuries can lead to substance abuse
ORANGE COUNTY, Calif., Dec. 6, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Newport Academy, a leading treatment center for teens that specializes in mental health, substance abuse, trauma and eating disorders, was featured on NBC's "Today" Show on December 5, in a segment highlighting teen athletes who have struggled with opioid addiction after sustaining injuries from high school sports.
The interview, conducted by Jenna Bush Hager, focused on three teen alumni from Newport Academy who shared their personal stories of dealing with substance use disorder after taking prescription medicine for injuries in swimming and football. Speaking about challenges they experienced, as well as the recovery process and treatment they received at Newport Academy, each teen offered a real-life look into the growing epidemic of painkiller abuse among adolescents. The segment also shared the insights of parents who offered advice for other families struggling with similar issues.
Newport Academy's founder and CEO, Jamison Monroe, Jr., provided expertise based on his years of personal experience in substance use and recovery. Monroe discussed how damaging prescription drugs can be for young teens and the risk factors that make teenagers particularly vulnerable.
"Prescribing opioid medication to teenagers is a very serious matter that should be carefully monitored by their doctors and parents," said Monroe. "Many teens are in a vulnerable state of development that could make them more prone to chemical dependency. The goal of recovery work at Newport Academy is to instill accountability and self-awareness, so they can commit to a happy and productive life free from addiction."
