Newman's Own Foundation serves up US$200,000 in grants to Canadian breakfast and lunch programs: charities invited to apply for funding
TORONTO, March 14, 2013 /CNW/ - Newman's Own Foundation, the organization started by the late actor and philanthropist Paul Newman, today announced that it plans to grant US$200,000 to registered Canadian charities that provide breakfast or lunch programs for disadvantaged children. Interested charities that meet the requirements are encouraged to submit a request to be considered for a grant of US$25,000 to US$75,000. The application process closes on April 10th, 2013.
"Children's nutrition is a key area of focus for Newman's Own Foundation because it was one of the areas that Paul Newman supported and one with opportunities for the Foundation to make a significant impact," said Lisa Walker, Managing Director of Newman's Own Foundation. "Research demonstrates that breakfast and lunch programs meet an important need in helping ensure all students get the nutrients and the energy they need to be ready to learn and participate in school. We encourage charities that support or execute these programs to submit a request for a grant from Newman's Own Foundation."
Research shows that eating1 habits are established at an early age and that eating a healthy breakfast helps prevent obesity and other chronic health problems. Well-fed children also do better in school, score better in math, and are less likely to drop out. In addition, adequate food consumption can help reduce absenteeism and tardiness.
To qualify for a grant, organizations must be registered Canadian charities providing breakfast and/or lunch programs to disadvantaged Canadian children. Interested Canadian charities that meet the criteria should submit their contact information and a brief summary, 200 words or less, on why their organization would benefit from a Newman's Own Foundation grant and how the grant will be used. Entries are to be emailed to [email protected] by 11:00 p.m. on April 10, 2013. Only selected organizations will be contacted to receive a full application for funding from Newman's Own Foundation.
