WESTPORT, Conn., Nov. 10, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Newman's Own Foundation today announced that it is awarding $1.5 million in grants to more than 20 organizations that support veteran entrepreneurship, providing veterans with the necessary training, support, and access to capital; and organizations connecting veterans to quality higher education and creating supportive networks on campus. Paul Newman, the late actor and philanthropist, established Newman's Own Foundation in 2005 to carry on his philanthropic legacy after he started Newman's Own, the food company, in 1982 with all profits going to charity. Newman was a World War II veteran, and the Foundation is pleased to continue its longstanding support of military service organizations in his honor.
The organizations receiving the grants provide assistance to veterans, helping them use the skills developed in service to their country to succeed in school, start their own businesses, or pursue other life goals. The organizations are located across the country.
"The men and women of our military have earned and deserve the respect and support of a grateful nation," said Robert Forrester, President and CEO of Newman's Own Foundation, a veteran with service in Vietnam. "We are proud to continue the long tradition begun by Paul Newman, who served as a radioman/gunner aboard an Avenger Torpedo Bomber in the Pacific theater in WWII, of supporting veterans, active duty personnel, and their families."
Military nonprofit organizations have been supported for over 20 years, with a total of $13.5 million donated since 2010. In addition to the Foundation grants, Newman's Own, Inc., has supported military service charities through the Newman's Own Awards for 17 years, in partnership with Fisher House Foundation and Military Times.
