New York's First Annual Ride To Conquer Cancer Launches To Raise Vital Funds For Cancer Research Institute In Manhattan
Funds raised through the world's largest cancer cycling event series will power life-saving immunotherapy research, treatment and care in New York and around the world
NEW YORK, Oct. 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- New York's first annual Ride to Conquer Cancer launched to the public on Wednesday to raise vital funds for the Cancer Research Institute in Manhattan. Funds raised through the world's largest cancer cycling event series will power life-saving immunotherapy research in New York and around the world.
"We are absolutely thrilled to announce our first annual Ride to Conquer Cancer benefiting Cancer Research Institute," said Jill O'Donnell-Tormey, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer and Director of Scientific Affairs at Cancer Research Institute.
"This year there will be over 100,000 cancer diagnoses in New York and across the United States, one in two men, and one in three women will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. At Cancer Research Institute, we are on a mission to extend the lives of cancer patients and reduce cancer-related deaths by fueling the development of a new class of smarter, more effective treatments that mobilize our body's natural immune defenses against all types of cancer. The funds raised through The New York Ride will be put to use immediately here in New York and around the world enabling our field-leading teams of doctors and scientists to continue playing a central role in the research and development of today's most promising immunotherapies," Dr. O'Donnell-Tormey added.
The Ride to Conquer Cancer will be a two-day, 150 mile cycling event through New York's pristine countryside with an overnight camp midway where participants will enjoy pre-set tents, hot meals, showers, live entertainment, massages and other festive activities. The Ride start and finish will be held on June 6th & June 7th of next year, and pit stops with fresh food, beverages and public cheer stations will be set up along the route to support Riders as they pass through local communities.
"Everybody knows someone who has had cancer, but this became very personal when my brother was diagnosed with testicular cancer," said Brian Howard, a resident of Cliffwood, New Jersey.
"Today, my brother is in remission and The Ride is the perfect opportunity to honor his battle and everyone else who fights this terrible disease every day. The more I can do by riding 150 miles and raising money and awareness, the better off we can be," Howard added.
The Ride to Conquer Cancer events have raised over $305 million in seven years for leading cancer institutes across The United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Dr. O'Donnell-Tormey said The Ride is specifically designed to be a cycling event for everyone and encouraged all people in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey to register, donate or request information by calling (844) 650-RIDE (7433) or by visiting www.ridetovictory.org.
"The Ride will be a remarkable experience for all those involved, and will bring together communities of cancer survivors, cyclists and their supporters with a common goal to conquer this disease. We hope everyone will join us in June for the first annual New York Ride," said Dr. O'Donnell-Tormey.
