New York State Has One Of The Highest Pancreatic Cancer Death Rates In The Country
Lustgarten Foundation Pancreatic Cancer Research Walks Address Community Needs
BETHPAGE, N.Y., March 24, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Lustgarten Foundation is hosting three Pancreatic Cancer Research Walks during the month of April in the New York metropolitan area to increase awareness and raise funds for cutting-edge research. One hundred percent of funds raised at the walks, taking place in New York City, Westchester, and Staten Island, will directly support pancreatic cancer research.
"We host several walks within the metropolitan area to meet the needs of our supporters who want to gather within their specific communities to heal, share resources, and become energized in the fight against pancreatic cancer," said Ann Walsh, Director of Events.
According to the 2017 American Cancer Society's Facts & Figures, New York State has the fourth highest death rate in the country. Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States. This year, more than 53,000 cases will be diagnosed and over 43,000 will die from pancreatic cancer. It has a five-year survival of rate of only eight percent due to the lack of early detection tests and long term effective treatments. With little financial support from the government, pancreatic cancer research heavily relies on private funding.
The Lustgarten Foundation has a unique and focused research strategy with an emphasis on earlier detection and personalized therapy. It is also the only pancreatic cancer organization with its own dedicated research lab which is located in Cold Spring Harbor, NY.
"I started the walk in Westchester eight years ago in honor of my beloved mother, Gigi. I wanted to turn my grief into hope and create something positive to help others affected by this disease. We chose to organize the Westchester Walk at Rye Playland as my mom loved to walk on the boardwalk," said Tara Shanes-Hernandez. "We join together with the Westchester community to raise funds for the Lustgarten Foundation because we know every dollar raised goes towards funding the very best pancreatic cancer research."
