NEW YORK, May 20, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- The New York Daily News is reporting a tragic, death out of Queens after a skateboarder has lost his life after colliding with a Parks Department vehicle ("Man on Skateboard Dies in Colliding With Parks Department Truck in Queens," April 17, 2016). According to reports, an 18-year-old long boarder died after he collided with a Parks Department truck in Queens. The collision took place just outside Forest Park in Woodhaven, less than one mile from the Forest Park Skate Park. The teen was traveling south on Forest Parkway, exiting the park, when he reportedly lost control of his longboard and hit the truck.
The 37-year-old truck driver remained at the scene, police stated as rescuers rushed the unidentified teenager to Jamaica Hospital. Unfortunately the young man died from his injuries. Witnesses described a gruesome, bloody scene at an intersection some are describing as inherently dangerous. Reportedly just a few hours after the crash, two skateboarders were scene going down the hill, blasting through a red light.
"Firstly, our hearts go out to the friends and family of this young man," said Adnan Munawar, Partner at Munawar & Andrews-Santillo LLP. "Hopefully other skateboarders will take a moment to reconsider the safety measures they take when traveling in the street, and hopefully others will pay a little extra attention to people traveling in such a manner. Obviously if the intersection is unsafe and there is a way to fix that, the city should do so."
"While this case might well be a horrible accident, all-to-often skateboarders, bikers, and other users of alternative travel means are the victims of accidents that could have been avoided. We are in a transition as a society where we are installing more bike lanes and spreading safety awareness, but we still have a long way to go.
