New York Employment Report: Employee Confidence Index Declines as Workers' Concerns About Job Hunt Increases

NEW YORK, Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The New York Employee Confidence Index decreased 8 points to 45.2 in December, according to the latest Spherion® Employment Report. The monthly survey of New York workers, conducted by Harris Interactive® on behalf of Spherion Corporation, found more workers concerned about their ability to find a new job, as well as a drop in the number of workers confident in their employers' future.

Results from the New York Employment Report:

• Thirty-one percent of workers are confident in their ability to find a new job, a decrease of 10 percentage points from November.
• Only eight percent of workers believe that more jobs are available, a decrease of five percentage from November.
• Fewer workers, 56 percent, are confident in the future of their current employer, a decrease of 16 percentage points from the previous month.

"Clearly, job creation is on the minds of most workers across the country, and as our report shows, for New York's workers as well," said Linda Perneau, vice president and general manager of Spherion Staffing Services. "With the recovery seemingly in full swing, but not yet yielding jobs, workers are more than likely feeling a little anxious about finding jobs – which is understandable. There does seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel, with more industry surveys and reports pointing to increased hiring in the first quarter of the 2010."
