New York College of Health Professions Announces The Don King Scholarship Fund
Fund Will Aid Students at Premier Institution for Holistic Health and Future Life-Saving Technologies
NEW YORK, May 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- There was a magical moment at the 2012 Commencement Ceremony for the graduating class of New York College of Health Professions. Before an audience of about 1,000, Don King was given an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters and delivered a passionate commencement address describing how he had come from poverty and subsequently went on to be the greatest promoter of our time. Don King adopted "Only in America" as his catchphrase to pay tribute to the country that gave him the platform to succeed.
During the Commencement speech, Kelly Hiser, owner of Kelly Oil in Texas, announced a generous donation for a Don King Scholarship Fund for future students attending New York College of Health Professions. Immediately afterward, Don King said, "Miracles can happen anywhere!"
The College, which has opened three new locations in Manhattan in the last year in addition to its main campus in Syosset, Long Island, will set up a committee and consult with Kelly Hiser and Don King to outline the criteria with which to award the scholarships.
Lisa Pamintuan, president of New York College of Health Professions, stated, "We were honored to have Dr. King as our commencement speaker and we are proud to institute a Don King Scholarship." When asked about the future relationship between the College and Don King, Ms. Pamintuan added, "While Dr. King has brought the world some of the most watched events in history as a boxing promoter, he is, at heart, a humanitarian. The College will shortly announce major medical breakthroughs that will save millions of lives around the globe, and we are thrilled to have the support of the recently honored Dr. King."
In addition to being a non-profit, New York College is the only private institutionally accredited College in its field in the New York metropolitan area. The College has an enormous patent portfolio worth tens of millions of dollars that can grow to hundreds of millions of dollars in the next decade. "While the College is small and relatively young, we believe that in the future it will have not only the stature of being the best in holistic health, which it is now, but will become one of the most important Colleges for future life-saving technologies," Ms. Pamintuan continued. "The College wants to specially thank Kelly Hiser for her generous contribution and looks forward to a long relationship with her as a friend and supporter of our institution."
The New York College of Health Professions graduates of 2012 will share a memory of a very different and special commencement speaker, while future students will excel and succeed from a new scholarship fund.
