New York City CIOs Reveal Hiring Plans For Second Half Of 2015
Robert Half Technology Survey Shows 22 Percent Plan to Expand IT Staff
NEW YORK, June 4, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Twenty-two percent of New York City-area technology executives recently surveyed expect to expand their information technology (IT) teams in the second half of 2015, according to the just-released Robert Half Technology IT Hiring Forecast and Local Trend Report. This is a 4-point increase from the previous six months and an 8-point increase from the same time period in 2014. In addition, 66 percent plan to hire only for open IT roles, 9 percent plan to put hiring plans on hold, and 3 percent expect to reduce their IT staff in the last six months of the year.

"Hiring for IT talent in New York remains particularly robust in the legal, nonprofit, and financial sectors," said Gary Sacks, regional manager for Robert Half Technology in New York. "Companies are seeking to expand their digital footprints and increase their speed to market in terms of data, information and transactions, all of which are driving the demand for technology professionals."
Hiring forecasts are based on interviews with more than 2,500 chief information officers (CIOs) from 25 major U.S. markets who were asked to provide a six-month hiring outlook.
Recruiting Challenges and Skills in Demand
Recruiting still remains a challenge, as 48 percent of CIOs said it's somewhat or very challenging to find skilled IT professionals today. They also revealed the skills in greatest demand within their organizations, which include:
- Windows administration (58 percent)
- Desktop support (54 percent)
- Network administration (54 percent)
- Wireless network management (54 percent)
Addressing Recruiting Challenges
Sixty-six percent of survey respondents said they are taking action to address recruiting challenges for IT staff. The following is a breakdown of the steps they are taking:
- Increasing networking activities (41 percent)
- Offering referral bonuses (38 percent)
- Using recruiters or staffing firms (34 percent)
- Hiring consultants to augment current staff (32 percent)

The surveys were developed by Robert Half Technology and conducted by an independent research firm. To ensure that companies from all segments were represented in the study, the sample was stratified by number of employees. The results were weighted to reflect the appropriate employee population in the United States. The margin of error is +/-1.6 percent at the 90 percent confidence level.
