New York City Becomes Center Stage for Antique Dolls
NEW YORK, Nov. 9, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- In a city known more for auctions of impressionist paintings, contemporary art and other genres considered long at the forefront of "fine art," it is a bit unusual to see antique dolls in the pecking order of wants amidst fashionable New York. But, Theriault's, the prestigious U.S.-based auctioneer of rare antique dolls and childhood objects will present a first-ever look for New Yorkers when it conducts a prestigious two-day auction event.
The event will take place at the legendary Waldorf-Astoria Hotel over the weekend of November 20 and 21.
Theriault's sees the location as the perfect opportunity to bring a better understanding of the importance of dolls as a decorative art that indeed touches the fringes of fine art.
"What many people don't understand," says Stuart Holbrook, President of Theriault's, "is that fine porcelain dolls from the 19th and early 20th century were often created by well-established artists and sculptors in France and Germany. Further, the costumes were frequently designed by specialty couture houses that created the finest in fashion for each. Modern society has yet to fully comprehend the artistic quality of the antique doll amidst the quell of mass-produced modern dolls."
Holbrook continues; "We are at a turning point in opening the eyes of a broader clientele to the beauty and aesthetic pleasure derived from the doll as an art form. Given that New York is the center of art and fashion in the U.S. we see antique dolls as deserving of a place in this arena."
The collection being offered is that of legendary American collector Nikki Kvitka, who for decades amassed a tremendous blend of rare 19th century French bebes, German character dolls produced during the art-reform movement of the early 20th century, and exceptional couture doll costumes and accessories from Paris design houses. Over 500 rare and exceptional pieces will be sold in the two-day auction that will feature many items expected to reach in the tens of thousands of dollars.
