New York CIOs Reveal Hiring Plans For Second Half Of 2014

NEW YORK, June 25, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Fourteen percent of New York-area technology executives recently surveyed expect to expand their IT teams in the second half of 2014, according to the just-released Robert Half Technology IT Hiring Forecast and Local Trend Report. This compares to 17 percent in the previous six-month period (January – June 2014). In addition, 71 percent plan to hire only for open IT roles, 11 percent plan to put hiring plans on hold, and 3 percent expect to reduce their IT staff in the last six months of the year.

In the same survey, 82 percent of New York-area chief information officers (CIOs) said they are optimistic about their companies' prospects for growth in the second half of 2014, and 67 percent feel confident in their firms' plans to invest in IT projects.

"Right now, web-based and mobile skills are in particularly high demand as website rebuilds and app development projects are on the rise," said Tom Borghesi, New York district president of Robert Half Technology. "Consulting opportunities remain strong as businesses are seeking skilled workers on a project basis. The top industries for job opportunities include software, media and advertising." 

The 2014 hiring projections are based on interviews with 100 CIOs who were asked to provide a six-month hiring outlook. The surveys were developed by Robert Half Technology and conducted by an independent research firm. In order to ensure that companies from all segments were represented, the sample was stratified by number of employees. The results were then weighted to reflect the proper number of employees in the greater metropolitan New York area. Robert Half Technology is a leading provider of IT professionals on a project and full-time basis and has been tracking IT hiring activity in the United States since 1995.

Recruiting Challenges
In terms of recruiting, 52 percent of New York CIOs said it's somewhat or very challenging to find skilled IT professionals today. It is most challenging to find skilled talent in the functional areas of applications development (14 percent), software development (13 percent) and security (13 percent).

Confidence in Business Growth and IT Investments
The survey results suggest that New York CIOs are optimistic about their companies' growth and IT investments. Eighty-two percent of CIOs reported being somewhat or very confident in their companies' prospects for growth in the second half of 2014. This compares to 91 percent in the first half of the year.

Sixty-seven percent of CIOs also said they are confident that their firms will invest in IT projects in the second half of 2014. This compares to 70 percent in the first six months of the year.

Skills in Demand
Fifty-seven percent of New York technology executives surveyed said that network administration is among the skill sets in greatest demand within their IT departments. Desktop support and wireless network management followed, with 56 percent and 52 percent of the response, respectively.
