New Version of VoltDB Database Enables Organizations to Drive Business Value from the Internet of Things
Company Sees Rapid Adoption of Fast Data Applications by Media/Entertainment, Energy and Security Markets as They Strive to Turn Streaming Data into Actionable Intelligence
BEDFORD, Mass., Nov. 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- VoltDB today announced that it has made key enhancements to the industry's only database system specifically designed to support the Fast Data applications necessitated by the Internet of Things (IoT).
To capitalize on the Fast Data (i.e. data in motion) generated by interconnected devices and systems, organizations are building and/or deploying applications that have the ability to instantly analyze and take immediate action on data. Progressive companies in the retail, media and entertainment, energy, and security markets recognize that untapped streaming data equates to missed revenue opportunity, a poor customer experience or serious operational and consumer risk. As a result, they are turning to VoltDB to power Fast Data applications that are transforming how they run their businesses.
In the media and entertainment sector, Fast Data analysis brings personalization to the home TV viewing experience: having real-time, relevant and customized content presented the moment we turn on the set. For utility companies, digital information from millions of smart meters can be used to drive operational efficiency and dramatically improve quality of service. In the case of security, having the ability to analyze in real time the data streaming into an organization's network and take swift, automated action to shut down actual threats means effective protection against cybercrime like major point of sale and DDoS attacks.
"We are utilizing VoltDB to obtain up-to-the-second operational visibility into the performance of the systems across our customers' carrier grade TV networks as well as enable real-time user targeting," said Mark Hydar, Head of Engineering, Ericsson MediaFirst, an end-to-end cloud-based platform for the creation, management and delivery of next generation Pay TV. "The database gives our platform competitive advantage by letting us analyze device and user data as it comes in from Tier One providers – from their cable and satellite network equipment, to web servers and databases – to create a highly interactive and personalized consumer experience across all devices."
New Features and Enhancements
VoltDB has augmented its platform to make it even simpler for organizations to process, analyze and make decisions on Fast Data.
- Import/Export of Fast Data: VoltDB delivers support and optimization for some of the most significant open source projects in its ecosystem, including Apache Hadoop, Apache Kafka, Apache Avro, and RabbitMQ, to make it easier for organizations to deploy and integrate Fast Data applications.
- Performance: The database offers a set of new features that make Fast Data applications run even faster on premise as well as in the Cloud, as demonstrated by recent IBM SoftLayer benchmark results. These include reduced latency, query performance improvements and optimized memory usage.
- Security: VoltDB has added Kerberos support for client authentication when accessing VoltDB, further reducing an organization's exposure to risk.
- Application Programming Interfaces (APIs): The database features a JDBC driver, an ODBC driver, and expanded JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) datatype functionality.
- SQL Support: VoltDB also has made programming and database access easier by boosting its SQL capability. New additions include SQL-92 function support including SQL Date and Time functions, SQL sub-query support, as well as a new Windowing sample application that demonstrates real-time analytics on a time-based window of streaming data. These enhancements reinforce the database's ability to meet the specialized performance and scale demands of Fast Data applications without forcing tradeoffs in ease-of-programming and/or the transactional consistency of ACID.
"IoT is beginning to fuel a data-driven economy that has enormous potential to redefine industries and reshape customer interaction, from entertainment to healthcare," said Bruce Reading, President and CEO of VoltDB. "However, this is only possible if organizations are able to both gain intelligence from data as it streams in from interconnected devices, and take immediate action that maximizes its business value. VoltDB provides the only combination of processing speed, real-time analytics, scale and transactional decision making crucial to support the Fast Data applications that will deliver on the promise of IoT."
