New U.S. Study Shows 75% Of Children Don't Drink Enough Water
6 in 10 Mothers Concerned About Children's Hydration
MOUNT LAUREL, N.J., May 5, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- A new study has found that fully three-quarters of American children drink less water than they should. The study, commissioned by SodaStream USA, the world's largest sparkling water brand, and conducted by ORC International, polled 1,000 mothers of children ages 4 to 12 about their water consumption. The research found that only one in four children drink the six to eight glasses of water recommended by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, with 4 percent of children not drinking any water at all.
In the survey, mothers described being concerned about the problem, as 57 percent of those surveyed believed their children weren't drinking enough water.
A separate SodaStream study on consumer water-drinking habits, conducted this year by Ipsos and comprising more than 1,000 U.S. adults, found that 15 percent of Americans don't ever drink tap water because they don't like the taste. The medical community continues to advise that dehydration leads to fatigue and poor health. But this latest research shows that Americans – adults and children – still do not hydrate adequately.
"The need for healthy hydration is one reason SodaStream is the first national beverage company to team up with the American Diabetes Association in promoting healthy beverage choices. As the weather gets warmer, kids will head outside to play. Increased activity requires even more hydration," said Doug Pritchard, president of SodaStream, North America. He continued, "SodaStream is a perfect Mother's or Father's Day gift because at a touch of a button, SodaStream machines transform the tap water that Americans know they should drink into the effervescent, guiltless, sparkling water that Americans want to drink. In fact, we know that SodaStream owners consume 43 percent more water overall. Instead of begging kids to drink water this summer, parents can enjoy healthier, sparkling beverages with their children. What's a better gift than a happy, healthy, hydrated family?"
