New Ultra 76 Tantalum Alloy with Improved Corrosion Resistant Properties from H.C. Starck Inc.
EUCLID, Ohio, March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- H.C. Starck Inc., Fabricated Products Group, a market leader in the supply of refractory metals and fabricated products is exhibiting its new Ultra 76 tantalum alloy with improved performance for Chemical Process Industries at the NACE CORROSION 2010 Exhibition in San Antonio, TX, March 15-18, 2010.
Corrosion resistant tantalum alloys have been used in various process industries involving aggressive, acidic environments. To address the issue of hydrogen embrittlement of conventional tantalum alloys and ensure reliable performance, H.C. Starck's engineers developed a new, improved tantalum alloy, Ultra 76, with improved resistance to hydrogen embrittlement and with enhanced corrosion resistance.
Test results in aggressive HCl environments outside currently acceptable ranges show the new Ultra 76 tantalum alloy exhibits lower corrosion rates and hydrogen embrittlement rates that are 1 to 2 order of magnitude lower than those of conventional tantalum alloys. Additionally, testing in aggressive H2SO4 solutions outside currently acceptable ranges reveals the Ultra 76 tantalum alloy has lower corrosion rates with hydrogen embrittlement rates that were 5 to 10 times lower than conventional alloys.
With comparable mechanical properties to those of conventional tantalum alloys, Ultra 76 can be easily adopted to the same processing and fabrication techniques. Ultra 76 does not require the additional steps of "Platinum Spot welding," commonly used in conventional tantalum alloy components to reduce damage due to hydrogen embrittlement.
The numerous advantages of the Ultra 76 tantalum allow for simplified fabrication, avoid inconvenient repairs and production losses, and ensure reliable, long service-life. Ultra 76 continues to provide the optimum cost-effective, long service-life for critical components in severe corrosive environments.
