New Survey Finds Men in the U.S. Want to Take Charge of Their Own Health and Wellness
Data also Shows Men Consider Sexual Health to be an Important Priority
BRIDGEWATER, N.J., Nov. 17, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- A new survey reveals that 90% of men in the U.S. want to take charge of their own health. The U.S. is one of eight countries that participated in this survey of 16,000 adults in an effort to better understand the state of men's health around the world. Its results were unveiled today in anticipation of International Men's Day, which is coming up this Saturday, November 19.
In addition to this strong motivation to take charge of their health, the survey found that men in the U.S. are confident about their ability to do so. Specifically, the U.S. portion of the survey found:
- Men are more confident about their ability to manage their health (89%) than they are about making career decisions (73%).
- Specific areas of their health that men want to work on include improving their level of fitness (85%), reducing their fatigue/boosting their energy levels (83%) and improving their diet/nutrition (84%).
- Despite the common misconception that men avoid seeing a doctor, most men (94%) are proactive about seeing their doctor. Many men (84%) also say they talk to their pharmacist, including when they have a question about a prescription medication or an over-the-counter (OTC) product.
- When a health issue arises, most men say they have enough knowledge to identify it (87%) and figure out what to do about it (90%).
The survey also found that sexual health is an important priority for men in the U.S. – and that "sexual health" means much more to them than just sex itself. Key findings on this topic from the U.S. portion of the survey include the following:
- Nearly 1 in 3 men (30%) say sexual health is one of the most important elements of their overall health and wellness – and this doesn't solely apply to younger men. The number of men ages 55+ who say sexual health is one of the most important elements of their overall health and wellness is the same as that of men ages 18-25 (30%).
- Men believe sexual health is a multifaceted mix of both physical and emotional factors, including the ability to perform sexual intercourse (84%), a regular frequency of intercourse (75%), the ability to achieve sexual satisfaction (84%), being free of genital diseases or infections (92%), and a sense of emotional intimacy with their partner (83%).
- Most men (74%) say having a healthy sexual relationship is critical to their happiness.
"The results of this survey are promising, as they suggest that men are more proactive than ever when it comes to their health and wellness," said Ana Fadich, Vice President of Men's Health Network. "They also reaffirm something we have heard first-hand from men across the country, which is that sexual health is a critical aspect of both their health and happiness. It will be important for us to keep this in mind as we continue our efforts to empower men to live healthier lives."
The U.S. portion of this survey was conducted online by Harris Poll on behalf of Chattem, Inc., the U.S. consumer healthcare division of Sanofi, in partnership with the Men's Health Network, a non-profit organization that advocates for men's health from August 31 to September 6, 2016 among 2,031 U.S adult men and women aged 18 or older, including 832 men.
