New Study Shows How to Make the Most of Your Workout with Thermos® Vacuum Insulation Technology
Findings published by leading journal prove benefits of hydrating with cold water during exercise
SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Oct. 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- It's easy to hit a plateau at the gym, but the key to improving your overall workout might be as simple as cold water. The Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition published a recent study* conducted by Athletes' Performance, a global leader in integrated performance training, nutrition, and physical therapy for elite and Olympic athletes in Phoenix, Arizona, to determine the effect of continuous hydration with cold water during exercise. Dedicated to finding new ways to help athletes perform better, Athletes' Performance used hydration bottles with Thermos® vacuum insulation technology to find that drinking cold water (40° F) significantly mediates and delays the increase in core body temperature during exercise, which could impede performance**.

"During our cold water trial, we found that a rise in body temperature was delayed by at least 30 minutes while drinking cold water as opposed to just 15 minutes for those drinking room temperature (RT) water (72 degrees F)," said Amanda Carlson-Phillips, Vice President of Nutrition and Research, Athletes' Performance. "While ingesting the cold water, subjects were able to significantly minimize their rise in core temperature over the entire duration of the study (ie, when comparing the magnitude of the change in core temperature, subjects who drank cold water had a significantly lower change in core body temperature than subjects who drank RT water (p=0.024)). Additionally, 49% of participants improved in the broad jump test and 51% in the bicycle time to exhaustion test with cold water consumption. These results are so meaningful that we now recommend all athletes, both professional and recreational, consume cold beverages during training sessions at our facility." To keep water at the recommended 40 degrees F during your workouts, start with cold water from the refrigerator (or tap water with ice) and keep it cold in a hydration bottle with Thermos brand vacuum insulation technology, which will keep drinks cold for up to 12 hours. Bottles with Thermos® vacuum insulation technology provide cold water hydration during workouts to keep your core temperature down, potentially relieving heat-related stress on the body that leads to fatigue and other negative effects on performance.
Each of the Thermos brand stainless steel vacuum insulated hydration bottle designs includes unique and convenient features to make it easy to stay active and hydrated with cold water. From 18 oz. leak-proof straw bottles to 24 oz. flip-top lid bottles, all athletes can find the perfect bottle for their workout routines. For more information, visit Thermos.com.
