New SAE International Book Examines the Latest in Laser Diagnostics and Optical Measurement in Internal Combustion Engines
WARRENDALE, Pa., June 19, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- A new book from SAE International examines combustion and pollutant formation processes in internal combustion (IC) engines.
"Laser Diagnostics and Optical Measurement Techniques in Internal Combustion Engines" provides an introduction to experimental techniques that are best suited for in-cylinder engine combustion measurements. It provides sufficient details for readers to set up and apply these techniques to IC engines and combustion flows.
The increasing concern about CO2 emissions and energy prices has led to new CO2 emission and fuel economy legislation being introduced in world regions served by the automotive industry. In response, automotive manufacturers and Tier-1 suppliers are developing a new generation of IC engines with ultra-low emissions and high fuel efficiency.
To further this development, a better understanding is needed of the combustion and pollutant formation processes in IC engines. As efficiency and emission abatement processes have reached points of diminishing returns, there is more of a need to make measurements inside the combustion chamber, where the combustion and pollutant formation processes take place. This book provides important information and research on how to make those measurements.
Author Hua Zhao, PhD, is a professor at Brunel University in London where he serves as Director of the Centre for Advanced Powertrain and Fuels Research and leads a team of 20 academic staff and researchers on the fundamental studies and applied research of cleaner and more efficient combustion engines. Dr. Zhao has been involved in combustion engine research and the development of laser diagnostics for more than 25 years. His research includes CAI/HCCI (controlled autoignition/homogeneous charge compression ignition) gasoline and diesel engines, two- and four-stroke combustion systems, highly downsized direct-injection (DI) gasoline engines, cost-effective air hybrid powertrain, and the development and application of advanced laser measurement techniques to internal combustion (IC) engines. He has collaborated widely with the automotive industry and provided consulting services to several vehicle, engine, and oil companies in Europe and China. Dr. Zhao graduated from Tianjin University in China and obtained his PhD from the University of Leeds in the UK. He is a a Fellow of SAE International and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.
