New prostate cancer study: Surgery is a better option than radiation
NEW YORK, Dec. 17, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- A new study says that for men with localized prostate cancer, surgery is the best long term treatment option and a better option than radiation therapy. The study was published in the journal European Urology.
The study was carried out at the Odette Caner Centre, Sunnybrook Research Institute, (University of Toronto, Canada). The researchers performed a meta-analysis of 19 studies which compared the success and survival rates of surgery and radiation therapy. The study involved about 120,000 men with localized prostate cancer who had either undergone surgery or radiation as a form of treatment. The researchers found that men who were treated with radiation were twice as likely to die from prostate cancer and about 1.5 times more likely to die sooner compared to those treated with surgery.
According to senior author, Dr. Robert Nam, "In the past, studies that have compared the success rates of surgery or radiation have been confusing because of their methods. We have evaluated all the good-quality data comparing surgery and radiotherapy, and the results are pretty conclusive; in general, surgery results in better mortality rates than radiotherapy."
The results show that surgery for the treatment of localized prostate cancer is not only more effective, but is also a better option in regards to the long-term prognosis as men with prostate cancer live longer when treated with surgery.
According to Dr. David Samadi at the Dr. David Samadi Prostate Cancer Center in New York City, "As a surgeon performing robotic prostatectomies for the treatment of prostate cancer, my goal has always been to extend quality of life as well as longevity for my patients. This research is significantly supportive as it strengthens the confidence in patients to have this form of treatment. It also provides them with the additional information they need to select the best long term treatment option for themselves, along with the help of their urologist."
For the treatment of prostate cancer, a Robotic Prostatectomy is the only treatment option that completely removes the entire prostate. This provides greater accuracy in regards to the staging and grading of the prostate cancer tumor. With this, urologists are able to develop the most optimal long term treatment plan of care for each individual patient. In addition, patients who choose surgery over radiation often have a better outcome in terms of quality of life.
