New OpenVPX Backplane from Elma Provides Both Optical and RF Slots
3U 3-slot backplane supports either the VITA 66.4 or VITA 67.1 standard
FREMONT, Calif., May 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Elma Electronic Inc. now offers a 3U 3-slot OpenVPX backplane for use in either optical or RF applications. Designed to meet VITA 65, the versatile new backplane is extremely useful in environments that require various slot-to-slot optical or RF interconnects or that require optical or RF I/O together with a high speed data plane connection to slot 1.

Slots 2 and 3 of the backplane will accept a VITA 66.4 optical module or, alternatively, a VITA 67.1 4-cavity RF module. Slot 1 is designed for a conventional 3U VPX module and has dedicated Fat Pipe connections to both slots 2 and 3. The data planes support 6.25 Gbaud per lane or 25 Gbaud per Fat Pipe.
This newest addition to Elma's VPX backplane line is ideal for highly integrated applications that require slots with optical or RF connectivity together with high speed connections to a processor slot. These include mission management and navigation for avionics systems, industrial monitoring and night-vision systems as well as shipboard systems for target tracking and HD displays.
The optical ferrules of the backplane currently support 12 or 24 discrete fibers or equivalent fiber ribbons for cost effective termination.
Available coaxial contacts support flexible, semi-rigid or rigid RF cabling to meet a variety of data processing, EMI shielding and infrastructure requirements. In addition, MultiGig compatible cables can be used with available accessories.
Technical Specifications:
- 3U 3-slot OpenVPX backplane designed to VITA 65
- Supports VITA 66.4 optical module, which accepts MT (MPO) fiber ferrules in slots 2 and 3
- Alternatively supports VITA 67.1 RF modules (4-coaxial inserts) in slots 2 and 3
- Provides built-in ESD ground protection in every slot
- All three slots will accept MultiGig compatible cables with available accessories.
- Ideal for highly integrated data processing or data collection applications requiring optical or RF connectivity
Pricing for the 3U 3-slot OpenVPX backplane starts at $2,300 for quantity 1, lower in quantities. Delivery is 3 to 4 weeks ARO.
