New Novel Imagines The Artful Dodger's Adventures in America
Alan Montgomery Offers Readers an Account of One Character's Life After "Oliver Twist"
OBERLIN, Ohio, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- When Jack Dawkins, the character known as The Artful Dodger in Charles Dickens' classic "Oliver Twist," is deported to the United States, readers are left with no further information about his whereabouts or circumstance. In his fascinating new book, "The Further Adventures and Life of Jack Dawkins, also known as The Artful Dodger" (published by Trafford Publishing), Alan Montgomery brings the iconic character back to life in a tale chronicling what happened to Jack after he arrived in the United States.
Set around 1830 to coincide with the time that Jack would have been sent over according to Dickens, Montgomery uses information from "Oliver Twist" to discern that Jack would have been born around 1815. He arrives in Boston harbor with a new resolution - to transform himself into a proper American gentleman.
A man named Galting Stone picks up Jack's indentured status and it's revealed that Stone is, in fact, none other than Jack's uncle. In a short time Jack learns everything about his past and becomes skilled at performing farming duties.
Meeting Galting Stone will lead Jack on a series of adventures that will delight any fan of "Oliver Twist." Join him as he copes with cultivating the ways of a gentleman as he fights the spirited nature of The Artful Dodger. He'll reunite with his best friend, fall in love and is even abducted by Oliver Twist's half-brother. As things take fateful twists and turns, will Jack be able to use his wits to survive and reunite with his true love? Find out in the rollicking pages of "The Further Adventures and Life of Jack Dawkins, also known as The Artful Dodger."
"Charles Dickens gave no background to any characters in Oliver Twist except for the title character," Montgomery notes. "The Artful Dodger is such a vivid character that a continuation of the character's rise from low-life makes for a fascinating arc. He is proof that it is more important who you are than who you were."
