New Mexico E911 Program Contracts L.R. Kimball to Conduct the Statewide NG-SEC Cyber Security Assessment as Part of the Planning for Next Generation 911 Services
EBENSBURG, Pa., June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- As a result of an RFP, the state of New Mexico E911 Program has selected L.R. Kimball, a leading architecture, engineering and communications technology firm, to conduct a statewide Next Generation 911 cyber security assessment and improvement plan as part of the state's Next Generation 911 (NG911) planning process.
Until recently, most public safety agencies have operated with standalone 911 systems. However, because NG911 broadly interconnects multiple public safety agencies, systems are becoming more susceptible to viruses, hackers, denials of service and other intrusions that can disrupt emergency operations. New Mexico is contracting L.R. Kimball to help make certain that their system remains secure when the state makes the transition to NG911 in the coming years.
"Next Generation 911 is revolutionizing public safety, and agencies need to take a long, hard look at their cyber security plans," said L.R. Kimball Senior Vice President Joel McCamley. "L.R. Kimball looks forward to applying its cyber security assessment expertise to aid in New Mexico's smooth transition to NG911. We believe it will serve as a model for other state and local 911 programs."
L.R. Kimball will work closely with the New Mexico E911 Program to assess and identify areas to improve security in accordance with the National Emergency Number Association's (NENA) NG911 Security (NG-SEC) standard. Findings will be compiled into a report and will be used as the foundation for creating a cyber security plan and NG-SEC compliance "roadmap." "A security plan is the foundation of an effective security program and it formally defines the agency's goals, responsibilities, and security program scope," says Jeremy L. Smith, CISSP, head of L.R. Kimball's cyber security team.
"The New Mexico E911 Program firmly believes in the critical role that cyber security plays in building a strong NG911 system," said New Mexico E911 Program Director Bill Range, ENP, PMP. "L.R. Kimball is an industry leader in providing cyber security, and we are confident their input will be an asset to New Mexico's NG911 system development."
