New Jersey's Spring Lake Boardwalk Welcomes Second Beach Season Since Superstorm Sandy
WILMINGTON, Ohio, June 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Only a handful of New Jersey beach towns continue to rebuild their boardwalks along the Atlantic shoreline in the second summer after Superstorm Sandy leveled or damaged many of them. Last May, Spring Lake, New Jersey Mayor Jennifer Naughton and the town council unveiled the new two-mile Spring Lake boardwalk, rebuilt with TimberTech Docksider, a popular low-maintenance composite decking material specifically designed for docks and boardwalks.
Selected for its ability to resist moisture damage, splitting, splintering, rot and decay during a long hot summer, this year the TimberTech boardwalk faced one of the worst New Jersey winters in recent history as well. So, how did it survive the freezing temperatures and extreme snow and ice? "The boardwalk looks as great as when it was installed last year," said W. Bryan Dempsey, Borough Administrator.
After the boardwalk was completely destroyed during the storm, Spring Lake relied on its own crews to install close to 25,000 TimberTech boards to rebuild it. The Department of Public Works crew completed the project in this busy resort town ahead of schedule and in time for 2013 beach season. Already, says Dempsey, the 2014 beach season looks promising. "The season is off to a good start, thanks to some nice weekends," he said.
TimberTech has long been a popular choice for homeowners' decks, as well as commercial installations like boardwalks and marinas. "We are so proud that TimberTech had a role in helping the New Jersey shoreline recover," said Carey Walley, VP Marketing, CPG Building Products. "Now Spring Lake beach goers can enjoy barefoot, splinter free comfort and the town can reap the benefits of lower maintenance."
The boardwalk is a traditional favorite of joggers and, at two miles long and 18 ft. wide, it is the longest non-commercial boardwalk in New Jersey. During the weekend of June 14, 2014, the beach and boardwalk were in full swing, despite water temps still not yet reaching 70 degrees F.
The Spring Lake boardwalk and those soon to be rebuilt in other shore towns are testaments to the shore's comeback after the devastating storm and offer a beacon of hope to residents and tourists.
