New iPhone App Takes Guessing Out of Impairment
Intoxicheck™ is new approach to estimate impairment electronically
VERONA, Wis., Dec. 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- New Years Day celebrations are just a few days away. This can mean big trouble for some people. Many people who drink tend to underestimate their impairment level. This can be a real problem if someone thinks they are ok to drive after having a few and ends up being arrested for driving under the influence. Even deciding to walk under the influence can turn deadly. In 2005, the journal Injury Prevention reported that New Year's Day is more deadly for pedestrians than any other day of the year. From 1986 to 2002, 410 pedestrians were killed on New Year's Day. Fifty-eight percent of those killed had high blood-alcohol concentrations (BAC). Alcohol also plays a significant role in the deaths of pedestrians throughout the year, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. In 2008, 38 percent of fatally injured pedestrians 16 and older had BACs at or above 0.08 percent, the legal definition for impaired driving in all states. The percentage rose to 53 percent for deaths occurring during 9 p.m.-6 a.m. Fourteen percent of pedestrian deaths involved drivers with BACs at or above .08 percent.
Innocorp, ltd released its new iPhone app intoxicheck™ to give people a reality check about how buzzed they may really be after drinking. intoxicheck is a research-based application that compares pre- and post- drinking activity results to determine impairment level. You don't need to count your drinks, or guess at how much alcohol is in the drinks you've consumed. intoxicheck works by comparing results from a series of challenges that you take while sober to results you get from taking the same challenges after you've had a few. The results intoxicheck gives you may prove invaluable in helping you make better choices based on your real impairment level.
By taking a series of reaction, judgment and memory challenges before drinking, you establish a baseline of sober performance that you can compare to your performance after drinking on those same challenges. In actual field tests of intoxicheck under controlled conditions, intoxicheck provided a reasonably accurate assessment of a person's impairment level.
