New Inpatient Unit Enables Maria Fareri Children's Hospital at Westchester Medical Center to Care for 450-500 Additional Children Annually
VALHALLA, N.Y., May 7, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The region's newest "neighborhood" could be its most significant.
Maria Fareri Children's Hospital at Westchester Medical Center – the children's hospital for the Hudson Valley and Fairfield County – is now caring for pediatric patients in the Arlene and Arnold Goldstein Family Foundation Athletics Neighborhood, a new, nine-room inpatient unit of the hospital that cares for the area's most seriously ill and injured children.
The new neighborhood, which was built within the hospital's existing footprint, is Maria Fareri Children's Hospital's second expansion since opening in 2004 with 104 beds. This growth brings Maria Fareri Children's Hospital's inpatient bed count to 127 and will enable the hospital to care for 450 to 500 additional children each year. The new neighborhood represents an investment in additional staff and resources for the $6.5 million project.
"The positive impact this new neighborhood will have on children's healthcare in the Hudson Valley and Fairfield County will be considerable," explained Dr. Michael Gewitz, Physician-in-Chief, Maria Fareri Children's Hospital at Westchester Medical Center. "When children are very sick or seriously injured, community hospitals turn to us for advanced services. Over the years, Maria Fareri Children's Hospital's reputation for providing outstanding care in a family-friendly environment has grown and as the request for our services increased, capacity became an issue. This growth helps alleviate some of these capacity pressures and with a focus on perioperative care, the new space enables Maria Fareri Children's Hospital to care for more children through the accommodation of rapidly growing services, such as our pediatric bone marrow transplant program and our diverse surgical subspecialties."
Like the other inpatient neighborhoods at Maria Fareri Children's Hospital at Westchester Medical Center, the Arlene and Arnold Goldstein Family Foundation Athletics Neighborhood will have single-patient rooms with private bathrooms, showers, wide-screen televisions and sleeping accommodations for parents. Its decorative athletics theme - replete with life-size images of children running, jumping and playing sports adorning its walls - will celebrate children's fitness.
According to Westchester Medical Center President and CEO Michael Israel, last year's completion of the Westchester Medical Center-funded Ronald McDonald House of the Greater Hudson Valley, the addition of nationally-recognized pediatric experts and the opening of this new inpatient neighborhood underscore the Medical Center's commitment to the region and its children.
"Maria Fareri Children's Hospital is the region's hub of children's healthcare. As the area's advanced-care resource, Westchester Medical Center will continue to expand and enhance services that deliver life-changing care to area residents," Israel said.
