New InformationWeek Reports Research Finds 13% of IT Pros Rarely or Never Deliver IT Projects on Time
And, just 14% say the business is generally extremely satisfied with the quality of IT projects.
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 15, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- InformationWeek Reports (http://reports.informationweek.com), a service provider for peer-based IT research and analysis, announced the release of its latest research report, which encompasses analysis of results from InformationWeek's recent 2012 Enterprise Project Management Survey and guides readers in more effectively managing IT projects. More than 500 business technology professionals responded to this poll.
Research Summary:
Exclusive trending from our June 2010 Enterprise Project Management Survey shows that organizational use of central project management offices fell nine points, to 60%, while use of formal project management methodologies plummeted 12 points, to 58%. Could that account for the problems IT has with delivering quality projects on time and on budget?
Findings:
- 67% of our survey respondents use spreadsheets as a project management tool; just 53% use dedicated PM software.
- 45% cite poor requirements planning as a top reason IT projects don't deliver expected results.
- 41% say the business generally views IT projects as a mixed bag; sometimes beneficial, sometimes not.
- 36% have no staff members certified in project management.

"Use of formal PMOs, or project management offices, has fallen off since our last survey," says Lorna Garey, content director of InformationWeek Reports. "That may have something to do with the economy—a PMO is an easy target for budget cuts. But a more ad-hoc approach to project management may be having a negative effect on how the business perceives IT, never a good thing when outsourcers are lined up to deliver services."
