New Frederick Douglass Scholarship Established at Hillsdale College
HILLSDALE, Mich., Oct. 12, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Hillsdale College today announced the endowment of the Frederick Douglass Scholarship, a new award designed to help high-achieving students who demonstrate significant financial need.
"The young Frederick Douglass was himself a man of enormous ability whose talents shone with the help of others," said Dr. David Whalen, provost of Hillsdale College. "We always strive for a body of students who possess the will and the ability to shine, regardless of their means. This scholarship is another way to do just that."
To be eligible for the Frederick Douglass Scholarship, applicants must be a first-generation college student, have an annual household income under $41,000, or come from an economically disadvantaged school district. The scholarship can cover up to the cost of tuition, room, and board, and is renewable each year provided the recipient maintains good academic standing.
"Sometimes there is an impression that private schools—especially private liberal arts schools—are too expensive," said Zack Miller, senior director of admissions. "That is not the case at Hillsdale College, and we want to dispel that myth. Our scholarship offerings are impressive. Most importantly, if a student is a good academic fit and desires a classical liberal arts education, then we will help as best we can to make a financial solution."
There is no formal deadline to apply. Those who would like more information on the Frederick Douglass Scholarship at Hillsdale College should contact Fred Schebor at [email protected] or call 517-607-2299.
