New England Photographer Wins International Documentary Family Photography Awards
Awards Celebrate a Growing Trend in Family Photography
NORTH READING, Mass., Nov. 16, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The Oscars of family photography, the Documentary Family Awards, just announced its 2017 winners. With 6500 entries, the Documentary Family Awards showcases the best documentary family photographers in the world. Taking home top honors was North Reading, MA family photographer, Jeff Borkowski, of coSeedPhoto. Borkowski also took home awards for Best Environmental Portrait and Judges Choice.
"To say that I am honored to be the first recipient of this award would be a gross understatement. I have great respect for photographers Kirsten Lewis, Jenna Shouldice, and the incredible panel of judges," said Jeff Borkowski. "I have long believed in the power of documentary family photography to draw families closer, strengthen bonds, and connect generations. These awards celebrate the importance of authenticity in family photography and reflect a sea change in the way families are beginning rethink their family photo archives."
We all remember those stiff, awkward family photos of our youth - propped up in matching outfits at the local mall or town park. Increasingly, families are seeking an alternate approach to build their photo legacies in a way which more faithfully reflects the richness, character, and connection in everyday life. The Documentary Family Awards aims to celebrate this growing trend.
The Documentary Family Awards were founded by world-renowned family photographers Kirsten Lewis and Jenna and Tristan Shouldice. Entrants competed in five categories including Water, Family Love, Humor, Environmental Portrait, and Decisive Moment. Entries were first judged by an esteemed panel of judges including photographers Anna Kuperberg, Huy Nguyen, Niki Boon, and Tyler Wirken. After which Kirsten Lewis and Jenna Shouldice determined final placements in each category and selected an overall winner. All judging was blind and, in a unique twist, final judging was live streamed.
"I think every day about creating images for clients that will stand the test of time and that someday might be discovered by someone's grandchild's grandchild, providing a glimpse into the story and character of their ancestry. I can think of no better way to accomplish this than through documentary photography," notes Borkowski.
