"Links between data and narrative are too often lost in the current format of a published scientific paper. Reading PDFs of papers in Utopia Documents helps restore that connection by enabling links to numerous public databases, as well as many other interactions, based upon semantic tagging of the text," said Andy Bertera, Executive Director of Marketing at New England Biolabs. "New England Biolabs is supporting improvements to the interactivity of scientific literature by providing data about our library of molecular biology reagents and their applications."
Utopia Documents is a free program already used by more than 22,000 scientists to transform any scientific literature in PDF format into an interactive document. For example, Utopia Document's semantic tagging engine allows tools and reagents cited in the methods section to be linked to the manufacturer's product page within one or two mouse clicks. Utopia Documents also connects literature to underlying public datasets, provides ways to export and graph tabular data, enables manipulation of molecular structures and sequence data, and changes references into hyperlinks. A special figure browser helps researchers scan papers in less time. The program also identifies the latest and trending papers using live data from Altmetric Mendeley, CrossRed, Scibite, and others.
Utopia Documents 2.0 is optimized for the life sciences, but can be used by scientists in any discipline. Utopia Documents is available for Macintosh, Windows and (shortly) Linux at: http://utopiadocs.com.
