New Edition of Shared Parking Book Highlights Groundbreaking Research on Mixed Use Parking Allocations for Developers and Planners
Released by Urban Land Institute, International Council on Shopping Centers & National Parking Association
WASHINGTON, March 16, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- The third edition of Shared Parking, a landmark publication and the sole source for estimating, planning and implementing parking across the most diversified use cases for mixed use development, was released today by the National Parking Association (NPA), Urban Land Institute (ULI) and International Council on Shopping Centers (ICSC).
First released in 1983, with a second edition printed in 2005, Shared Parking has been an industry-standard book that highlights recommended parking allocations for planners and developers.
The book provides a fundamental grounding in technical guidelines to assist developers of all types in considering the best parking allocations for their development. Shared Parking comes in two versions: one version is the book by itself, and the other has a separate Excel calculation tool, which helps developers determine exactly how much parking they need for a wide variety of project types and variables.
"The collaboration between NPA, ULI and ICSC brings leaders across land development, retail, parking and transportation together to envision the future application of parking in mixed used development based on cased studies and a data driven model," said NPA President Christine Banning, IOM, CAE. "This book combined with a powerful calculation tool empowers architects, engineers, planners and developers to right size parking as a land use."
Updates to the third edition include:
- An expanded number of land use conditions from 20 to 32, along with creating recommended default values for each use that are modernized for time of day and seasonality;
- Expert opinions and advice on how to determine appropriate assumptions on driving and non-captive adjustments, and
- An adjusted calculation tool in Excel to account for changes over the past decade that have changed the future of parking space usage.
"Communities benefit from shared parking because it reduces traffic and encourages walking," said ULI Global Chief Executive Officer, W. Edward Walter. "Getting the number of parking spaces right is also critical to managing costs while supporting vibrant, mixed-use developments. This book has been a must-have on this topic for developers and planners for years. I believe the industry will welcome this new edition, which includes more land uses, updated parking ratios, and the impact of trends that will help them estimate parking based on their tenant mix."
The book was written with the support of the NPA Parking Consultants Council (PCC), led by Jerry Marcus, principal, the Parking Advisory Group LLC, and Mary Smith, PE, principal and senior vice president, Walker Consultants, as the lead author. More than 20 engineers, planners and consultants across parking and transportation contributed to the project.
"This book and the corresponding Excel model are a game-changer for all the stakeholders involved in parking," said Smith. "The outputs will allow operators, estimators, planners and builders to properly scope projects for maximum efficiency, saving time and money across the entire project life cycle."
Shared Parking is available for purchase through the NPA, ULI Bookstore and ICSC.
