New Domain Extensions Rule the Pack at TechCrunch Disrupt 2016

The TechCrunch Disrupt Hackathon; one of the most prestigious hackathons in the country was held at Pier 48, San Francisco over the weekend of 10-11 September. The event saw over 60% of the teams using a new domain extension to host their hackathon projects on including overall winners - http://www.pointshop.space.

The event, held annually by TechCrunch in the Bay area garners attendance from across the world, with this year witnessing nearly 1000 hackers battling it out to create innovative projects within the stipulated 24 hours. Products and hacks created at the Hackathon have seen great success in the past with GroupMe, a group text messaging service, being ultimately acquired by Skype for $80M.
With over 140 teams showcasing their hacks, the judges had a tough time picking the most innovative and unique project with the best scope for success. PointShop.space was adjudged the overall winner. The app uses augmented reality to give users highly contextual information about any product by showing live information via the camera. Anuj, from the PointShop team explained that [they] "are extremely happy with the choice of the domain name. It showcases exactly what the product does. You point and shop, in space!"
Hackers were excited to use the new domain extensions and claimed availability of names, high recall value, meaningful and descriptive extensions to be some of the primary reasons to use the names.
Other winners on new domain extensions included the automatic trash disposal system Racoon.tech which utilizes a camera to identify the type of trash and accordingly opens the right bin. When asked about their choice of domain name, Eugene from the team commented, "The Racoon.tech domain name is easy to remember and extremely catchy. At the same time it shows that we are a high-tech product and without compromising on the name that we always wanted".
Along with client facing customer service app BotsWanna.space; the Pepper robot based learning solutions for Autistic kids - Autismsolutions.tech and Support Cooperative that aims at improving customer experience by sharing support information between companies.
Every year thousands of startups are created in the Bay Area alone which in turn increases the demand for high quality memorable domain names.
