New Diabetes Study Further Details the Health Benefits of Weight Loss Surgery, notes Dr. Feiz & Associates
Patients who underwent bariatric procedures were 80% less likely to develop Type 2 diabetes in one recent study.
LOS ANGELES, Nov. 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Many patients elect weight loss surgery because they know of its ability to improve or even reverse a great many difficult health problems, especially Type 2 diabetes. A recent study, however, found that weight loss surgery is also an effective method of preventing diabetes. These surgical procedures, the same ones often performed by leading Los Angeles area surgeon Michael Feiz, M.D., F.A.C.S, are now being considered highly proven options in terms of both preventive and corrective medicine.
The study, reported in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology journal, compiled electronic patient data for 2,167 obese patients who elected either the Lap Band, sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric bypass procedure, and compared their medical history with the same number of obese patients who did not have any kind of weight loss surgery. In a three year period, 177 patients who did not have any kind of weight loss surgery developed Type 2 diabetes compared to only 38 patients who did have surgery. This showed that patients who had surgery were 80% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes in the several years following their procedure.
Commenters pointed out that, while eye-opening, the study still needed more consideration before direct causation is factually asserted. There are many factors to consider when determining exactly how a patient's weight loss surgery will impact their health. It is important to note that the surgeries themselves are not a "magic wand" solution, but rather they give patients the necessary tools to lose weight at a steady and healthy rate. One way that patients can insure a positive long term outcome is to select a board certified surgeon like Dr. Feiz who takes the time needed to fully understand their case, and can provide the necessary support to guide patients through their post-surgery weight loss journey.
In the spring of 2014, Dr. Feiz was featured on a segment covering weight loss on The Doctors TV show where he was joined by three of his patients, a mother and her two daughters, five months after their surgeries. The three women had undergone sleeve gastrectromies and are now experiencing a host of health benefits. One of the three women, Clarissa Colone, now has normal blood sugar levels after being told by doctors that she was pre-diabetic before her surgery. While we will obviously never know whether or not Clarissa would have developed diabetes had she not gotten the surgery, her case is a strong example of one of Dr. Feiz's patients who has seen results mirrored by the recent study. Dr. Feiz performs such procedures as sleeve gastrectomy in Beverly Hills and in locations throughout Southern California.
