New Course Prepares Wounded Veterans for Career in Growing Medical Field
Wounded Warrior Project Sees Huge Interest in Coding Course
PHOENIX, July 13, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Medical coding and billing is a fast-growing field in the medical industry. A pilot program by the Wounded Warrior Project ® (WWP) Transition Training Academy (TTA) will provide the skills veterans need to find coding and billing jobs. TTA offers WWP alumni, their families, and caregivers opportunities to learn new career skills and provide hope in the transition to civilian life. Along with the Warriors to Work® and Education Services programs, TTA will help to economically empower injured service members and their supporters.
The Certified Professional Coder course launched Monday, July 6 at the WWP offices in Phoenix, where 40 students in class and online started the 12-week course. WWP alumni, family members, and caregivers will spend 4.5 hours per day, four days a week learning about the technical field.
Medical coding uses a series of numbers and letters to designate diagnoses and procedures in hospitals and clinics. It helps these medical facilities comply with federal patient privacy laws while providing employees with the information they need to care for patients.
Marcela Jimenez is a caregiver taking advantage of the opportunity to learn a new skill. "Medical coding is a great class that WWP is offering," Jimenez said. "They are giving us all the tools that we need for success, from all the materials to the great teachers we have."
At the end of the course, students have the opportunity to test for Certified Professional Coder credentials, a qualification that can mean up to a 20 percent increase in earning potential.
TTA offers educational opportunities for WWP alumni, families, and caregivers to increase skills in computer fields including computer repair, computer networking, and computer security. If you or someone you know is interested in one of these programs, visit woundedwarriorproject.org or call the Resource Center at 888.WWP.ALUM (997.2586). The Resource Center is open Monday-Friday, 9 am-8 pm.
