As the first book in the MySeaBuddies series, "Barney and Barry, The Hitchhikers" introduces young readers to Fletcher the sea turtle. Satisfied with his solitary life roaming the world's oceans, Fletcher is at first dismayed to find that a pair of homeless barnacles – Barney and Barry – have chosen to plant themselves on his shell. Now joined for life, the unusual trio quickly become friends.
Life takes another interesting turn for Fletcher when a dodo bird named Babs lands on his shell as he's sunning himself at the water's surface. Smitten by the bright and cheery dodo, Fletcher, with help from Barney and Barry, concocts a plan to get Babs' attention. What results is an incredible adventure that sees a once-ordinary sea turtle become a courageous hero.
The story of Fletcher and has friends is presented in chapters, making for an easy reading experience for youngsters. Colorful, whimsical illustrations by Lana McCleary further enhance the book. Accurate descriptions of sea creatures add an educational element, while Fletcher's maturation from a grouchy loner to a more outgoing individual communicates important life lessons.
"Barney and Barry, The Hitchhikers" has already received several glowing reviews on Amazon.com. One reader deems it a "wonderful story for children of all ages." Another remarks that "this is a wonderful, uplifting book to read to young children." Reviewers have also noted how the story is equal parts entertaining and educational, as all effective children's books should be.
The next book in the MySeaBuddies series is due out early next year. In the meantime, Sharon is organizing monthly contests and giveaways on goodreads.com; in July, readers will be encouraged to design a bow tie for Fletcher the sea turtle.
