New Chairman, Board Members, Appointed to National Safety Council Board of Directors

INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 24, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Safety Council announced that Mark Vergnano, CEO and president of The Chemours Company, has been elected chairman of the NSC board of directors. Vergnano succeeds John Surma, retired chairman and CEO of United States Steel Corporation, and took over as chairman on Sunday, Sept. 24, following the Council's annual board of directors meeting at the NSC Congress & Expo.

The Council also welcomes eight new members to two-year terms:

• Anas Al-Hamwi, Senior Director of Safety & Injury Management, Walgreens
• Patrick Bass, CEO, thyssenkrupp North America
• Laura Liddicoat, NSC/NHTSA Toxicology Fellow, Center for Forensic Science Research & Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison – Representative for the NSC Alcohol, Drugs and Impairment Division
• Patrick K. Mullen, president and CEO, CB&I
• Tim O'Toole, CEO, FirstGroup
• Anne R. Pramaggiore, president and CEO, ComEd
• Richard Sanders, Corporate Regulatory Compliance manager, Quanta Services, Inc. – Representative for the NSC Construction and Utilities Division
• Nick Stavropoulos, president & COO, Pacific Gas and Electric Company

Vergnano has been leading The Chemours Company for two years, overseeing a $5 billion operation with products that reach into homes and businesses around the world.  Prior to Chemours, Vergnano spent more than 30 years with DuPont, where he began as a process engineer and rose to various manufacturing, technical and business posts. His time there included three years as group vice president of DuPont Safety & Protection.

Vergnano also sits on the boards of the American Chemistry Council and Johnson Controls, Inc. He holds a bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Connecticut and master's degree in Business Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University.

Al-Hamwi is the Senior Director of Safety & Injury Management at Walgreens, with 20 years of experience at the company.  He also is a founder of the Walgreens Boots Alliance Retail USA Health, Safety and Environmental Governance Committee. Al-Hamwi holds a Doctor of Medicine degree from Damascus University.

Bass is the CEO of thyssenkrupp's $9.9 billion North America region and provides strategic direction for the company's businesses across Canada, U.S. and Mexico. Previously, Bass headed R&D for thyssenkrupp's global elevator business where he oversaw several industry changing innovations including the ropeless elevator capable of moving sideways, diagonally as well as up and down.

Liddicoat is the Toxicology Fellow for the Center for Forensic Science Research & Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a member of the Society of Forensic Toxicologists, the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and the International Association for Chemical Testing, and is the representative on the NSC Alcohol, Drugs and Impairment Division.

Mullen is the president and CEO of CB&I with 30 years of experience in energy infrastructure. His background includes serving as COO, overseeing strategic development, engineering and construction operations, and working with refining and petrochemical technology. Mullen also serves on the board of Vectren Corporation.

O'Toole has served as FirstGroup's chief executive since November 2010. Previously he was the managing director of London Underground, and president and chief executive of Consolidated Rail Corporation. O'Toole is a member of the board of directors for Edison International and Southern California Edison.

Pramaggiore is president and CEO of the utility company ComEd, having assumed the role in 2012. She previously served as COO – a role to which she was appointed in 2009. Pramaggiore serves as a board member of Chicago Federal Reserve Board, Motorola Solutions, Inc. and Babcock and Wilcox Enterprises.

Sanders is corporate regulatory compliance manager for Quanta Services, Inc., which has 30,000 workers around the world designing, installing, repairing and maintaining utility network infrastructure. He is a certified safety manager who has worked in risk management and safety, health and environmental protection for 40 years, and he is the representative on the NSC Construction and Utilities Division.

Stavropoulos is president & COO of Pacific Gas and Electric Company, bringing 35 years of experience in the domestic and international energy industry. He is a member of the board of directors for the American Gas Association and the Gas Technology Institute, and serves on the advisory board of Underwriters Laboratory's Integrated Health and Safety Institute.
