New Bluetooth Enabled Smart Tweezers LCR- and ESR-meter from Siborg Systems Inc.
New Bluetooth enabled Smart Tweezers allows users to log measurement values over the air
WATERLOO, Ontario, May 19, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- A new model in the Smart Tweezers line of handheld LCR- and ESR-meters now has a Bluetooth enabled connection. The ST5S-BT allows users to remotely record their measurements as they are done, allowing a review of previous measurements to save time while working with Surface Mount Technology. Siborg will begin offering the new device in their online store in mid-May.

Smart Tweezers ST5S-BT is based on the popular ST-5S model of Smart Tweezers; this model offers the most features and functions as well as a basic accuracy of 0.2%. The Bluetooth enabled model can connect to computers and NI Labview® via USB receiver stick that enables a virtual serial port. Eventually, the device will be able to connect to a dedicated app for iOS, Android and Windows. The ability to track previous measurements allows for quick review, and is crucial when all measurement values must be cited.
When the ST5S-BT sends information, it is received as a string of values separated by commas. Ex: C1.398nF,R3.264kR,10kHz,0.5,S,,,,
This text represents the main impedance value (Capacitance 1.398nF), secondary impedance values (Resistance 3.264 kR), the test frequency (10kHz), the test signal level (0.5 Volts), the measurement mode ('S' for Serial), and 4 reserved values.
Currently, the sent data can be received by any communication software, such as the free Tera Term software. The attached screenshot shows the Tera Term software receiving the data from an ST5S-BT. This data can be saved into a document or file, or saved as a database when using LabView.
Smart Tweezers are an invaluable, efficiency-driven device for testing and troubleshooting SMT; the design combines a multimeter with a set of sharp tweezers that are able to grasp components, including those on a packed PCB or loose. Without any set-up Smart Tweezers are able to determine the type of component and best test parameters before measuring with high accuracy; all measurement values are instantly displayed on the devices' OLED display. The ability to test without any set-up is a time-saver for all users, but especially those in production lines where work moves fast.
The ST-5S is the preferential device amongst professionals and companies alike; this model offers the most features in the Smart Tweezers family. The extensive menus on the ST-5S allow users to choose specific measurement parameters for each job while still offering fully automatic measurements. Features on this device include:
- Automatic and manual L, C, R and ESR measurements
- Basic accuracy of 0.2%
- Automatic test range selection
- Quality factor (Q), Dissipation factor (D) and Impedance (Z) measurements
- Component sorting
- Semi-Automatic offset subtraction
- Continuity/diode/short testing
- Li-Ion battery with 40 hour continuous-use life
- 4-way joystick-navigation that allows quick selection of basic test parameters
- NIST Traceable Calibration Certificate
- 1 oz. Weight
Siborg has begun offering this device in the LCR-Reader Store, and possibly on their Amazon sales channels in the USA, Canada and Europe in the future. The LCR-Reader offers customers a one-stop-shop for all their Smart Tweezers and LCR-Reader needs, including new task kits and calibration certificates for the LCR-Reader.
