New Addiction and Recovery Book Offers a Message of Hope for the Opioid Crisis
LEICESTER, Mass., Feb. 21, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- At a time when many family members are feeling helpless against addiction, Donald Steiger is sharing his story as a message of hope.
After overcoming his own battle with addiction and seeing others struggle, many of them young people Donald Steiger was inspired to write about his path to success. His first book, "Suck Up the Purple Buttermilk," focuses largely on the nature of addiction and the difficult process of getting clean. Addicted to heroin for decades, Steiger faced countless challenges while trying to turn his life around. He hopes readers and their families will be inspired by the accounts in his books and use them to spark their own recoveries from drugs and alcohol.
"For twenty years I have been where most people could not image, and this book is my honest and daunting account of abuse, addiction and recovery."
Steiger's second book, "Passion in the Fire," highlights the many decisions and challenges he has faced during the last 34 years of sobriety. The messages in this book are important for anyone trying to stay clean after overcoming the initial battle, he said. For those recovering from addiction, every day is a new chapter, each decision either bringing momentum or setbacks.
"Through 34 years of sobriety, I put all the practice I have learned from my first book to the test," Steiger added.
Born in Hawthorne, Calif., Steiger endured from an early age the suffering caused by addiction. Subjected to verbal and physical abuse stemming from his parents' alcoholism, his childhood was full of upheaval and he didn't learn to read and write until he was in his thirties. At the height of his addiction, it seemed that he was destined either for prison or death.
Decades later, after overcoming steep odds, the path to authorship for Steiger was as unique as his story. John Lynch, a professor and former writer for "That 70's Show," heard Steiger speak at an event and encouraged him to write about his persistence through extreme adversity.
"He was totally convinced that the first book would save many lives, and he was one hundred percent right," said Steiger, who has received feedback from several readers crediting the messages in his books helping them beat addiction. "I have been writing and speaking ever since."
For Steiger, the goal for his books isn't to gain fortune or fame but instead to inspire people struggling with an all too familiar battle. The Spencer resident knows his town has been hit particularly hard by the opioid crisis over the last five years, but speakers and writers like Steiger willing to share their stories have helped impact families.
"I want to make a difference in some small way," Steiger said. "Some people go through their lives not knowing their true purpose. It's a privilege to see people succeed in life."
