EVANSTON, Ill., Dec. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Industrial employment in Nevada fell 2.1% over the past year according to the 2012 Nevada Manufacturers Directory®, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers' News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI reports Nevada lost 1,206 industrial jobs between October 2010 and October 2011, less than half of the 3,600 jobs MNI reported the state lost over the 2009-2010 survey period.

"The recovery is gaining momentum in Nevada and across the U.S.," says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. "Although the state is suffering from the fallout from the housing bust, its educated workforce and low business costs are still a draw for a variety of enterprises."
MNI reports metal mining is Nevada's largest industrial sector with 6,231 jobs, up 2% over the year. Printing and publishing accounts for 5,232 jobs, up 2.3%. Third-ranked fabricated metals accounts for 5,016 jobs, down 8% over the past twelve months.
Industrial sectors related to the housing industry lost the most jobs over the year with lumber/wood down 37% and stone/clay/glass down 15.6%, due partially to the closure of U.S. Gypsum Co.'s location in Empire. Other losses included rubber/plastics, down 5.4%; textiles/apparel, down 3.8%; electronics, down 2% and instruments/related products, down 1.3%. Gains were seen in transportation equipment, up 9%; chemicals, up 8.6%; primary metals, up 6%; paper products, up 3.1%; and food products, up 1.9%.
Bright spots for the state include the opening of an ACH Foam Technologies polystyrene plant in McCarran. Alaskan gun manufacturer Wild West Guns has established a new plant in Las Vegas, and solar array manufacturer Amoniex broke ground on a new manufacturing facility in North Las Vegas.
MNI's city data shows Las Vegas is Nevada's top city for manufacturing employment, home to 16,782 jobs, with no significant change reported over the year. Second-ranked Reno accounts for 9,083 jobs, with employment down 5.3%. Industrial employment in Sparks declined 2.4% and is currently home to 4,362 industrial workers.
