October 2011 marks the eighth annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month, sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security in cooperation with the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC). During National Cyber Security Awareness Month, NetQin will focus on raising consumer awareness of the dangers involved in using smartphones and other devices, and provide valuable information on how users can protect their devices.
Smartphone growth has been explosive in the past few years, with global smartphone shipments now exceeding personal computer (PC) shipments. Consumers are using their mobile devices to email, shop, bank, and stay in touch and socialize with businesses, family, and friends. However, many people are unaware of the risks and don't take adequate precautions to protect their devices.
"There is a significant lack of awareness among mobile device users that the devices they use to text, email, and store personal data are just as at risk of security threats as their PCs," said Dr. Henry Yu Lin, NetQin's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "National Cyber Security Awareness Month is an excellent time to help smartphones users understand these risks and the need for mobile protection."
Throughout the month of October, NetQin will be executing its awareness campaign with the following activities:
- NetQin will be blogging, tweeting, and Facebook posting on a variety of mobile security topics, including malware, spyware, phishing, identity theft, and protecting lost or stolen phones. It will also be providing relevant tips and advice from the National Cyber Security Alliance's "STOP. THINK. CONNECT." campaign.
- NetQin will be giving away NetQin Mobile Security Premium accounts on Twitter and Facebook the last week of October to encourage followers and friends to keep their mobile devices secure. Free downloads of the basic edition are available to everyone - as always - at www.netqin.com.
- The NetQin Security Research Centers in the U.S. and China - which are first to identify 75% of global mobile threats - will continue to identify and monitor mobile security threats that could impact consumers. Its large research team will be blogging regularly about the latest threats and how to prevent them on the NetQin Mobile Security Research Blog.
