NEPDC Accepting Proposals for 2017 Target Challenge Grant Opportunity

LEBANON, N.H., June 6, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- NEPDC and partners have announced their annual Target Challenge grant opportunity for 2017. NEPDC is seeking abstract proposals for technologies that prevent or aid in the prevention of unintended removal or dislodgement of catheters or tubing. Identified as a significant problem in pediatric medicine and care delivery, catheters and tubing may remain fixed to the body for prolonged periods of time, ranging from days to months. Dislodgement or unintended removal of these items, particularly in children, can result in death, emergency department visits and admissions, lengthened inpatient stays and treatments, and increased costs to hospitals and the healthcare system. In addition, these events are incredibly distressing to children and their families.

"As a clinician, I am most concerned about patients causing injury to themselves from removal of lines and drains," says Dr. Ryan Ratts, Pediatric and Adult Hospitalist at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. "When giving patient instructions on G-Tubes, I tell families that it is not if the G-Tube comes out, but rather when the G-Tube comes out."
