Neighbor.com Crowns Provo, Utah, America's Most Neighborly City of 2026

San Francisco and Boise, Idaho, take second and third in a ranking shaped by what Americans say matters most

LEHI, Utah, Sept. 29, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Neighbor.com, the largest marketplace for storage and parking, announced today that Provo, Utah, is the most neighborly city in America. San Francisco and Boise, Idaho, round out the top three in the 2026 rankings, released in celebration of National Good Neighbor Day.

This year, Americans helped write the formula. A national survey asked more than 1,000 adults to rate the qualities of a neighborly city, and their answers set how much each of the seven categories counts. Safety mattered most, followed by helping neighbors directly.

Provo won with a big heart and safe streets. Utah County taxpayers claimed charitable gifts worth 4.5% of their income in 2023, according to IRS data. That is the highest rate in the study and more than three times the 100-city average. Provo also has the fourth-lowest violent crime rate on the list and finished in the top 10 in five of the seven categories, including No. 2 for local sharing and a tie for No. 3 in volunteering. It climbed from No. 5 in 2024 and has finished in the top six in each of the last four rankings.

Survey Highlights
Alongside the rankings, the survey asked Americans how well they know the people next door:

• Many Americans can't name their neighbors: A third (34%) know two or fewer neighbors by first name, and 1 in 10 don't know any.
• Neighbors show up in a crisis: 94% say they'd help their neighbors if a natural disaster or emergency hit their area.
• Young adults feel close but know fewer names: Half of adults under 35 (50%) know two or fewer neighbors by name, compared with 24% of those 55 and older. Both groups say they feel about equally close to their neighbors.
• Few young adults tie voting to neighborliness: With the midterms five weeks away, only 8% of adults under 35 gave voting the top importance rating for a neighborly city, compared with 24% of adults 55 and older.

Methodology: Neighbor.com ranked 100 U.S. cities on: violent crime, property crime, charitable giving, volunteering, voter turnout, population growth, and local sharing activity. Each city was scored on how it compares with the average. Each measure was weighted using a Sept. 2026 SurveyMonkey survey of 1,011 U.S. adults.
