"Need for Speed" Mustang Raises $300,000 For the Edith and Benson Ford Heart & Vascular Institute
DETROIT and PALM BEACH, Fla., April 15, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- With the packed house Palm Beach crowd buzzing and the Barrett Jackson auctioneer gaveling "Sold! Sold! Sold!" this past Saturday afternoon, car collector Dave Flynn of Columbiana, Ohio, offered the $300,000 winning bid for the one-of-a-kind Mustang currently starring in Dreamworks Studio's blockbuster "Need for Speed" movie (video).
Flynn's $300,000 bid ended a fast and spirited competition for the custom-designed wide body Mustang at the annual Barrett Jackson Palm Beach Auction. The bidding brought the final proceeds of this year's Henry Ford Health System "Get Your Heart Racing" fundraiser to more than $660,000. All proceeds from "Get Your Heart Racing," and from the Mustang auction, go to the Edith and Benson Ford Heart & Vascular Institute.
"Dave Flynn dug deep and bought a coveted car for his collection but he did more than just buy a car," said Sandy Hudson, Chief Development Officer at Henry Ford Health System. "His purchase will ultimately help to save lives."
W. Douglas Weaver, M.D. the Institute's Vice President and Medical Director and past president of the American College of Cardiology, applauded Flynn and the fundraising effort.
"The Heart & Vascular Institute is just like the Mustang: cutting edge and high value," Dr. Weaver said. "Funds from the Need for Speed Mustang's sale will be used for technology that helps both doctors and patients determine risk for serious cardiac conditions."
The Need for Speed Mustang, which was donated by Ford Motor Company, was the centerpiece of Henry Ford Health System's annual "Get Your Heart Racing" fundraiser. "Get Your Heart Racing" has raised over $1.8 million for the Heart & Vascular Institute over its first three years.
The 2014 iteration of "Get Your Heart Racing" is scheduled for Friday, September 12, 2014 with a gala Pit Party at Eastern Market Shed 3. On Saturday, September 13, "Get Your Heart Racing" moves to Ford's Dearborn Proving Grounds for an afternoon of dynamic driving activities.
