WHITING, Ind., May 16, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- As the economy continues to stabilize and gas prices start to rebound, more U.S. adults reveal they are planning to take a vacation this summer. A new CouponCabin.com survey finds that nearly one-in-five (17 percent) U.S. adults(1) said they are much more likely to take a vacation this summer compared to last. An additional 22 percent said they are somewhat more likely to take a vacation this summer compared to last. This survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin from April 27th – May 1st, 2012, among 2,212 U.S. adults ages 18 and older.
Overall, a large majority of families will hit the road to go on vacation this summer. Nearly seven-in-ten (68 percent) U.S. adults plan to take a vacation this summer (June – September 2012), while 32 percent said they do not plan to take any vacations this summer.
"It's encouraging that as consumers start to feel more confident in the economy, more of them are planning to spend money on a vacation this summer," said Jackie Warrick, President and Chief Savings Officer at CouponCabin.com. "With the memories of the recession still fresh, though, many of those with vacation plans are taking action now to save money and prepare for the expense of their trips."
Those planning to take a vacation this summer are already getting started on preparing to save money. When asked what they are doing now to save money on their upcoming summer vacation, U.S. adults said the following:
- Looking at travel deals sites – 41 percent
- Cutting back on extraneous expenses (manicures, gourmet coffee, etc…) – 38 percent
- Using coupons to save as much as possible – 36 percent
- Doing research on budget-friendly lodging and attractions – 34 percent
- Putting away extra money in an existing savings account – 33 percent
- Looking at general daily deal sites – 24 percent
- Going in on accommodations with friends or family – 23 percent
- Taking on an additional job or freelance work – 12 percent
- Starting a new, vacation-dedicated savings account – 8 percent
- Other – 6 percent
In addition to employing a variety of tactics to save money ahead of a vacation, other families are open to saving money by taking a "staycation." In fact, more than half (51 percent) of U.S. adults(1) would consider taking a "staycation" this summer to save money.
Regardless of their plans for this summer, some of the longest lasting vacation memories can be due to unfortunate circumstances. When asked what their worst summer vacation memory was, a random sampling of U.S. adults shared the following:
- Arriving at the hotel I had booked and finding it up for auction.
- Babysitting my little brother while in Las Vegas.
- Being in the Florida Keys during Hurricane Andrew.
- Coming home to find out I'd been replaced at work.
- Driving through Death Valley in August with no air conditioner.
- Getting left at the Grand Canyon.
- A moose attacked my jeep while camping.
- Taking a trip with the wife and four kids in the car for 5 weeks and 10,000 miles.
- Got food poisoning and had to come home early.
- Stayed in a hotel infested with bed bugs.
- Slept on a blow-up swimming pool mattress on the floor of a motel.
- A skunk sprayed my son.
