Nearly 2.5 Million Beverage Cans Recycled For The Great American Can Roundup Scout Council Challenge
Girl Scouts of Louisiana - Pines to the Gulf Council Receives Top Honors in Can Manufacturers Institute Recycling Contest
WASHINGTON, June 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Girl Scouts of Louisiana - Pines to the Gulf Council takes top honors, $500 prize money plus the value of the recycled aluminum as champion of the fourth annual Great American Can Roundup (GACR) Scout Council Challenge. The council recycled 29,700 pounds of aluminum beverage cans. The top recycling troop -- Troop 505 from Louisiana Pines to the Gulf Council -- recycled more than 1,200 pounds of aluminum per scout over the competition's fourth month challenge.
The GACR Scout Council Challenge, sponsored by the Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI), is designed to create awareness of the environmental benefits of recycling cans. Along with the scout council winner, which is determined by pounds of aluminum recycled per council members, additional prizes are awarded to the individual troops that recycle the most per capita amongst all participating councils. The challenge began on January 15, 2015, and ended on April 30, 2015. A total of 22 councils competed in the challenge with more than 700 boy and girl scouts from 38 troops participating in this year's recycling contest.
"We are so incredibly proud of the girls for taking action on something so important to them, and making the world a better place. Their hard work shows leadership and great teamwork. What a wonderful example they have all set for their communities," said Rachel Broussard, CEO of Girl Scouts of Louisiana - Pines to the Gulf.
The second place council winner, the Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland Council recycled nearly 21,000 pounds of aluminum beverage cans and received $300 in prize money.
Second and third place troop recycling honors went to two Girl Scout troops in Kansas Heartland Council – Troops 50028 and 50244, respectively. These scout champions recycled nearly 20,000 pounds of aluminum beverage cans between all 24 registered girl scouts.
"Once again, our girls have done an amazing job collecting aluminum cans during the annual drive," said Liz Workman, CEO of Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland Council. "They understand the importance of recycling to our environment and have raised the awareness of an entire community through their efforts. We couldn't be prouder of their year-round environmental stewardship."
"Providing a forum for our youth to understand the importance of maintaining a sustainable environment is significant to our industry," said CMI President Robert Budway. "I applaud the Boy and Girl Scouts for embracing the importance of recycling through their participation in the GACR Challenge. Its individuals and groups like these that make the aluminum beverage can the most recycled beverage container in the United States."
