NC Eminent Domain Law Firm to Host No-Cost Seminar for Wilkes County Residents Whose Land Will Soon be Taken
DURHAM, N.C., July 8, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The NC Eminent Domain Law Firm will host a complimentary public meeting on July 11th for Wilkes County residents that will be affected by the North Carolina Department of Transportation's plans to widen NC Highway 268.
The current design proposes that the state use its power of eminent domain to take part, or all, of over 90 business and residential properties.
The $28 million dollar project intends to widen 2.9 miles of NC Highway 268 to make it a four-lane highway. The stretch in question begins at the highway's existing multi-lane section east of NC 18 and continues to SR 1966 (Airport Road).
According to the NCDOT, "improvements to NC 268 are needed to provide adequate capacity for existing and future traffic."
They estimate that by 2035, traffic along this section will increase by 11,100 to 26,400 vehicles per day. Current statistics also indicate that congestion may be responsible for some of the rear-end collisions along this portion of NC 268.
This project ranked fourth on a list of 40 priority projects for Wilkes, Ashe, Alleghany, Avery, Yancey, Mitchell and Watauga counties.
According to the NC Eminent Domain Law Firm, land acquisition is scheduled to begin very soon. They encourage property owners that will be affected by this project to attend their no-cost seminar at the 7:00pm on Thursday, July 11that the Hampton Inn in Wilkesboro.
The seminar is designed to give property owners information about the eminent domain process in North Carolina and how they can best protect their legal rights.
"Property owners often don't realize that these offers are negotiable. Not only are they negotiable, but, in my experience, the initial offers can be much too low," said NC eminent domain attorney Stan Abrams.
Abrams, and his colleague Jason Campbell, both worked as attorneys for the North Carolina Department of Transportation previously, before joining the NC Eminent Domain Law Firm.
"What I learned working for the NCDOT is that they function just like any other buyer. They want to pay as little as possible for your land." Abrams said.
Abrams is scheduled to lead the seminar. For more information, call the NC Eminent Domain Law Firm at 1-877-393-4990 or visit their website - http://www.nc-eminent-domain.com/upcoming-seminars.
